Tiger Tiger Review

by Brian Baxter

This centrally located restaurant (not far from the Night Bazaar and opposite the Pornping Hotel) describes itself as offering International food, within a Mediterranean style setting. Both fair comments, since the menu, although not over large, has a range of different dishes such as Peking Duck in pancakes and pastas and on Sundays a Roast Dinner, with a choice of chicken, beef or pork with all the trimmings (275 baht which sounds very reasonable). So the range covers many nationalities and the place itself has pleasant airy feel to it, with a rather noisy terrace facing the road, a bar and an interior restaurant with ‘Latin’ music.

The prices are reasonable and the portions very big. The service quite friendly and the waiting time reasonable. If you go for one of the starters such as the mushrooms with a creamy pepper sauce ( 99 baht) be prepared for a large slice of toasted wholemeal bread smothered in good quality mushrooms and a tasty sauce. It would make a decent meal for lunch on its own. Ditto for the prawns served in a similar fashion but naturally another sauce (150 baht).
Recently I tried the salmon steak which was fine and served with fresh vegetables and sautee potatoes and this was fine. There are several classic pastas and their ‘speciality’ is called Mamma’s Meatballs, served in ‘rich’ tomato sauce (160 baht). Their puddings are limited to ice creams and such things as apple pie and cream. Once again quite hearty food. There is a decent drinks menu with house wines and bottles and beers at around 75 baht.
If you are out for an evening shopping or want to fill up before a late trip to Bubbles disco just across the road, this may be the place for you. With modest drinks and service reckon on around 400 baht upwards a head, less if you go just for main course and a drink. Seating is comfortable and the restaurant itself spacious. Find Tiger Tiger at 23/7-8 Charoenprathet Road. Tel: 082 337 0227. Open from 11a.m. until what they describe as ‘late’.
