Propolis, also called Bee Glue, is a resinous mixture that honey bees collect from trees and plants. It is used as a as a building material and sealant for unwanted open spaces and small gaps in the hive. It also serves as a structural defence mechanism for the hives as its anti-bacterial properties defend against harmful bacteria and diseases from outside. , thus creating a sterile environment inside the hive. Intruders are coated with propolis and thereby sealed off from the hive. This mummifying effect is best known from the Egyptians who used this technique to preserve their pharaohs.
Propolis’ color varies depending on its botanical source, the most common being dark brown. The substance is sticky at and above room temperature, but becomes hard at lower temperatures.

Propolis is claimed to have beneficial effects on human health due to its antibiotic and anti-bacterial properties. It has been used in natural medicine for the relief of various conditions, including inflammations, viral diseases, ulcers, superficial burns or scalds. Propolis kept in the mouth has been recommended as a remedy for a sore throat, and it is even thought to protect against caries and other forms of oral diseases due to its antimicrobial properties.
